Welcome.
I'm Sherman.
I'm a Product Designer that thrives in ambitious yet ambiguous environments where I find excitement in uncovering clarity and purpose. I embrace experimentation and focus on simplifying complex problems to drive real measurable impact through design.
My first interaction with the field of Product Design came about back in 2019 when I first stumbled across the documentary “Design Disruptors”, produced by InVision. The documentary explored the transformative impact of design and its role in shaping the success of modern businesses. Companies all over the world are leveraging the power of design in order to disrupt their respective industries in order to stay competitive in a rapidly evolving market.
Inspired by the ethos of human centricity, I dwelled into the world of Design Thinking, User Experience and Product Design.
I am a Service Designer working in public service for The Ministry of Energy Climate Solution CleanBC’s BC Home Energy Planner. I completed my bachelors in design from SIAT SFU and designed previously at Nokia & OSENSA Innovations.
When I'm not building things, I love travelling, playing video games, perfecting my golf swing at the range, and picking up Japanese as a second language as I prepare for an upcoming proficiency test.
CONTEXT
A Quick TL;DR on Home Energy Retrofit Upgrades
Home Energy Retrofit Upgrades involves making modifications to a home in order to improve its energy efficiency and sustainability.
Air-Source Heat Pump
Transfers heat between outdoor and indoor air for heating and cooling.
Double/Triple Pane Windows
Retains indoor heat during winter and blocks external heat during the summer.
ENERGY STAR-rated Appliances
Reduces energy consumption and lowers utility bills by using more-highly efficient appliances.
Air-Source Heat Pump
Uses up to 3-4 times less electricity than traditional electric water heaters by transferring heat.
Solar Panels
Generate cleans, renewable electricity for homes, reducing energy bills and reliance on the grid.
Insulation & Sealing Air Leaks
Reduces heat transfer in walls, attics & floors and prevents heat loss by closing gaps.
Improved Comfort & Air Quality All Year Round
Maintains consistent indoor temperatures while reducing allergens and pollutants.
Increased Efficiency, Decreased Bills
Reduces energy consumption, leading to significant cost savings on heating, cooling, and electricity.
Contribute to a Cleaner Environment
Reduce your home's carbon footprint and help contribute to lower greenhouse emissions.
B.C. is rising to the challenge of climate change, however retrofit upgrade adoption remains slow.
How Might We ...
Create a mass-market provincial service…
for
BC Homeowners of all different stages of their unique home retrofit journey…
that
educates them on the notion of energy efficiency, introduces them to the options and rebates available, and motivates them to begin considering cleaner home energy retrofit upgrades.
My Design Mantra's
Be Comfortable being Uncomfortable.
Designing for the ever-changing problems and needs of the world means designing for change, complexity, and ambiguity. I've learned to always stay resilient and resourceful amid the chaos.
Design with Passion & Purpose.
I am dedicated and passionate about what I do, and I take full ownership of each product I design and ship. Having seen firsthand the impact of my work, I am driven by the opportunity to make a difference.
Learn to Fail Quickly
Fast-paced, quick iterations drive my ideation process, enabling me to explore a wide range of functional and creative solutions while iterating thoughtfully and with purpose.
Stay Hungry, Stay Curious, Stay Foolish.
I am a lifelong learner, both in my profession and personal life. I deeply value the exchange of feedback and critiques in order to push each other to continuously improve and skill up.
A little about myself.
I'm a naturally optimistic and curious individual that goes through phases of delightfully random hobbies. I'm also an avid traveller that loves trying new experiences and cuisines where-ever I go.
Culturally diverse upbringing
I was born in Vancouver but spent my teenage years in Hong Kong. Growing up in an international city like Hong Kong allowed me the opportunity to appreciate how culture blends into design of all forms, whether it was product, graphic or architecture.
My 5-9 after my 9-5.
Since graduating, I find myself having more time on my hands. This past year, I've been setting aside at least 30 minutes of my night to prepare for the JLPT N4 exam, a test to evaluate and certify Japanese proficiency for non-native speakers.
Closely collaborating with the UX Researchers on the team, an user journey map was illustrated in order to create a holistic visualization of the end-to-end experience. The process ultimately helped us visually run through various common user scenarios, revealing numerous edge cases and design opportunities that was unaccounted for and could serve as quick wins ahead of the provincial launch.
Emailed Plan & Report PDF’s
Previously plan and report was downloaded straight onto the users browsing device. However from pilot user data, close to pilot users accessed the service using a mobile device.
In order to better cater to mobile users, GCNotify, a digital government service to send consistent and accessible email notices from a trusted domain, was integrated into the planner for PDF plan and reports to be emailed out.

Connecting Work with Play.
As someone studying Japanese, I often make conections between my hobby and my work.
